Volunteer Opportunities

Our garden and trail maintenance volunteers assist in keeping our native plant demonstration gardens and 14 acres of trails in tip-top shape for birds, pollinators, and community members alike. Prior gardening experience is appreciated, but not necessary.

The Sanctuary is home to several animal ambassadors who require regular care. Animal care volunteers assist with the feeding, habitat-cleaning, and other needs of our rescue turtles, snake, and insects.

Animal care volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

Our education volunteers assist our experienced teaching staff in providing hands-on educational experiences to students at their schools or at the Sanctuary.

Programs volunteers help guide our educational and nature-oriented programs at the Sanctuary alongside our experienced education staff.

Work alongside our Be a Good Egg Outreach Tech to educate beachgoers on the importance of sharing the shore with nesting shorebirds on the beach. Training is provided. These opportunities occur on weekends throughout the summer.

Our Teen Conservation Ambassadors program is for students aged 13 through 18 who are interested in getting involved in hands-on conservation work and environmental projects on Long Island! Some exciting opportunities have included garden projects, creating fishing line recycling bins, building shelters for nesting terns, and more. Learn more.

In addition to the positions listed above, we also offer volunteer days throughout the year at the Sanctuary and elsewhere, including:

  • Beach cleanups
  • Garden volunteer Fridays in the spring and summer
  • Trail and garden maintenance days
  • Installing and removing shorebird protection fencing
  • ...and more!

and follow us on  and  to be the first to find out about these events!

We are also happy to accommodate larger volunteer groups through offices, schools, and other interested groups. If you're looking for a way to connect your group with the local community, develop team-building skills, or just get outside, email us at trsac@audubon.org to plan a volunteer day!
